Chicago Paraplegia / Quadriplegia Lawyer

Were You Paralyzed in an Accident?

Spinal cord injuries, no matter if they were caused by medical negligence, a motor vehicle crash, construction accident or any other situation, can leave victims permanently disabled and, in the most serious cases, even paralyzed. The effects of paralysis vary depending on the location and severity of the injury – paraplegia affects patients’ lower torso and legs, while quadriplegia can affect patients’ entire bodies from the neck down. No matter how severe the paralysis is or how much of your body it affects, many patients need to change their entire lifestyle to accommodate their limited motor and sensory functions.

The medical bills and lifestyle changes can cost millions of dollars, and you shouldn’t have to bear that financial burden when your injury was caused by someone else’s negligence. At Power Rogers & Smith, L.L.P., our Chicago personal injury attorneys are prepared to assist you with your case, and provide you with the elite legal representation you need to fight for your rights. Contact us today to tell us more about your case.

How Severe is Your Injury?

Paralysis can be classified in different ways depending on where the injury occurred, and which parts of your body are affected:

  • Quadriplegia affects the entire body from the neck down, including arms, trunk, legs, hands, and pelvis. It’s also referred to as tetraplegia by medical professionals.
  • Paraplegia affects the lower portion of the victim’s trunk, legs and pelvis.

Paralysis is also classified by the severity of the symptoms in two ways:

  • Complete paralysis means that all or close to all sensory and motor function is lost below the injury site.
  • Incomplete paralysis means that the victims retains some sensory and / or motor function below the injury site.

While any type and level of paralysis can have a dramatic effect on your life and require incredibly expensive treatment and devices, people suffering from quadriplegia may require 24/7 care and assistance along with more expensive vehicle modifications and additions to their home to allow them to move about and travel. These significant costs can reach into the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, depending on the care and resources required. In addition, compensation for lost wages, disfigurement, and loss of a normal life may be recoverable after an accident resulting in paralysis.

Our Record of Success

Our results speak for themselves. Throughout our firm’s history, we have secured numerous multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements in paralysis cases for our clients. Some of our significant victories include:

  • $30 Million Verdict, Medical Malpractice Case – During a laparoscopic nephrectomy, our patient’s suffered from aortic ligation and transection caused by a stapling device that went unnoticed until he was transferred to an outside institution. His is now a paraplegic and is permanently on dialysis.
  • $18.5 Million Verdict, Medical Malpractice Case – A 36-year-old-man suffered from a stroke, causing the left side of his body to become paralyzed. His emergency room doctor and family physician were found to be negligent because they failed to diagnose his subacute bacterial endocarditis. At the time, this was the largest medical negligence verdict that year in the United States, and the largest ever in the history of Illinois
  • $10.43 Million Verdict, Motor Vehicle Negligence and Paralysis Case – A 71-year-old man’s truck was hit by a semi-tractor, leaving him with incomplete paralysis in his legs and arms.
  • $9.75 Million Settlement, Medical Malpractice and Paralysis Case – A former Loyola University of Chicago professor was left paralyzed after a C6 vertebrectomy intended to decompress his spinal cord at the C6-7 and C6-5 levels left behind osteophytes, creating internal stress in his spinal cord.
  • $9 Million Settlement, Medical Malpractice and Paralysis Case – The injection of an anti-platelet drug intended to alleviate neck pain from an accident our client was previously involved in led to a blood clot in his spinal cord. Emergency surgery was performed too late, and he was left permanently paralyzed.
