Devon C. Bruce Provides Keynote Address to City Club of Chicago
The case arose from Rita Crundwell’s embezzlement of $53.7 million dollars from the City of Dixon. She was entrusted with the task of treasurer for the city. Crundwell started siphoning money from Dixon in the early 90’s. She used the money for an extravagant lifestyle beyond her means and to finance her Quarter Horse Operation. This is the largest reported municipal embezzlement in the history of the United States. Mr. Bruce obtained a recovery for the taxpayers of Dixon against the accountants responsible for auditing the City of Dixon and the bank that Rita Crundwell used to embezzle the money. Crundwell was also charged with 19 years and 7 months in incarceration.
The recovery was the largest single recovery for any plaintiff reported in the 2014 Chicago Lawyer Annual Settlement Survey.
