Head Cooling

Did Your Child Not Receive Treatment In Time?

Birth injuries can result in devastating and potentially permanent damage, but medical advancements have provided doctors with treatment options that they can use to treat newborn children. One of these treatments, head cooling, is used to treat children who suffered from birth asphyxia, and can minimize further brain injuries and even prevent death. While this potentially life-saving treatment can be incredibly effective, it needs to be used as soon as possible – even a slight delay could have significant consequences. If your child could have been treated with this medical therapy but wasn’t because of your doctor’s inaction, negligence, delayed diagnosis, etc., you may be able to pursue legal action.

What Is Head Cooling?

Hypothermia therapy was first tested by medical professionals in the 1980’s on children who suffered from birth asphyxia, and discovered that it had considerable injury-preventing and potentially life-saving effects including:

  • Delayed cell death
  • Excitotoxicity
  • Apoptosis

In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of a new type of cooling treatment known as the Olympic Cool-Cap, which cools only the infant’s head rather than their entire body. While doctors go back and forth on which treatment method is more effective, they agree that cooling the injured child’s head can significantly increase their chances of recovering from their injuries and preventing further injury.
