study recently released by the Universidade Estadual de Londrina in Brazil found
that overall the use of mind-altering substances was high amongst commercial
truck drivers and was linked to poor working conditions. The researchers looked at data
from around the world to learn about the use of legal and illegal substances
in commercial truck drivers. In addition to the information collected
by the researchers, they also included 36 previous studies on the issue
in their review.
The data relied upon was both from what drivers admitted in surveys as
well as data collected from physical testing. According to the lead researcher,
Edmarlon Girotto, “the consumption of psychoactive substances is
an important risk factor for the individual and collective health”
which could lead to more accidents.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, over 500,000 accidents
involving trucks occur yearly. See the Commercial Motor Vehicle Fact Sheet
here. In 2011 alone, these accidents resulted in over 3,700 people killed and
over 88,000 people injured.
